Professionalism

Does it even exist anymore? I'm pretty sure it does in some forgotten time, which is a shame because it should be the basis of our existence. The workplace is a harsh enough environment on its own, we owe it to ourselves to not make it worse. I mean, it's fine if you don't like one of your co-workers but for the sake of getting things accomplished and for the sake of everyone's sanity, both parties should push personal feelings aside for the time being and, at risk of using a cliche, put their noses to the grindstone.

I prefer not to discuss personal matters when blogging about issues such as this because I want to offer an unbiased approach but I just cannot help myself. I work, unfortunately, as a cashier. Anyone who works with the public knows what vexed multi-stressor it can be. It is bad enough cashiers have to put up with people's rubbish, but having bosses and management act on personal hatred for you does not help at all.

At work we do have opportunities to grow and get promoted but it seems as though the people at my particular store do not believe in abiding by the rules for promotion. We have a rule of seniority which states that someone who started after you cannot be considered for a position before you. Pretty simple right? Well, it's not. I have been a cashier now for 3 years. That's dedication. Yes I realize there are others who have been at the store and company for decades, but I am a student and to stay at a job and never have any problems regarding or requiring major action. I have had the occasional complaint but who hasn't? So because I am just like everybody else there I should have no problems right? Ernt. It seems the people who have the deciding factor on someone's fate at the store have it against me. Whenever we go through a training period where people are considered for the training of a new position, I am somehow overlooked.

Is there anyone else having problems such as these? How can we compete and strive in the workplace if people let their personal feelings decide the fate. In a perfect world we would hope that professionalism would determine the outcome of a job but instead the fact that we like or dislike someone does the talking.

Love

You know, love is a truly funny thing. I know that's a cliche, but it's true. No body knows how to define it but yet they abuse it every day. What's even more funny is people's reaction to the word. I mean after all it is just a word. Right? Okay so let's just pretend that love is more than a word. Let's say it's a feeling. How do you describe that feeling to someone? How do you describe that feeling to yourself? How do you even know what you're feeling is love? I'm sure there isn't some stomach ache you feel that tells you and I'm sure there's no dream you have at night that tells you either. So how do you know?

Feeling this way isn't cool especially when the other half won't admit it. Why is he so scared? I'm not. I'm embracing the way I feel. There's just something in me. I can't describe it. I'm so confused. I just wish he were here so we could talk and I could tell him how I feel to his face and see his reaction.
